The Heritage of Millau

Designated as a “City of Art and History“, Millau boasts a wealth of cultural and historical treasures:

  • The Millau Viaduct. Take the opportunity to drive across this iconic bridge. Spanning 2.5 km and supported by seven slender concrete pylons, it is the 12th highest bridge in the world, standing 270 metres above the Tarn River.
  • The Gallo-Roman archaeological site of La Graufesenque is a spectacle in itself. Located at the confluence of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers, it was a major centre for producing sigillata ceramics during the Roman Empire.
  • The Millau Belfry is an impressive structure comprising a square 12th-century tower and a second, octagonal tower from the 17th century. It offers a stunning panorama over the city’s rooftops.
  • The Pont Vieux and its mill are listed as historical monuments of France. Built in the 1100s, the bridge still stands proud today despite losing much of its structure during the floods of 1758. The old mill, however, is remarkably well-preserved, with its wheels, basin mechanisms, roof, and façades still visible.
  • The Museum of Millau and the Grands Causses, housed in the historic Pégayrolles mansion, features collections on palaeontology, prehistory, Gallo-Roman and medieval archaeology, and an exhibition on leather tanning and glove-making, two traditional crafts of the town.
